Signs Your Air Scrubber Needs Repair
Air scrubber problems aren’t always obvious. Here are the most common signs something is wrong:
- Persistent odors that the scrubber isn’t neutralizing
- Musty or stale air despite the system running
- Indicator lights showing an error or fault
- The unit has stopped turning on altogether
- Noticeable increase in dust or airborne particles indoors
- Allergy or respiratory symptoms worsening despite the scrubber running
- The system is making unusual noises it didn’t make before
- Your home feels less fresh than it did when the scrubber was working properly
Types of Air Scrubbers We Service
We repair and maintain all major types of air scrubbing systems for homes and businesses across Los Angeles:
- Ionic air scrubbers: Release negative ions into the air that attach to and neutralize airborne contaminants including dust, bacteria, and mold spores
- UV air scrubbers: Use ultraviolet light combined with a catalyst to produce oxidizers that actively neutralize pollutants in the air and on surfaces
- Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) scrubbers: Use UV light and a titanium dioxide catalyst to break down VOCs, bacteria, and odors at a molecular level
- HVAC-integrated scrubbers: Installed directly into the ductwork to treat all air circulating through the property. Examples include ActivePure and RGF REME HALO systems.
- Portable air scrubbers: Standalone units used in specific rooms or spaces for targeted air treatment
- Hydroxyl generator scrubbers: Produce hydroxyl radicals that neutralize contaminants without producing ozone. These systems are safe for occupied spaces.
Common Air Scrubber Problems We Fix
We handle all types of air scrubber repairs for homes and businesses across Los Angeles. Some of the most common issues we see:
- UV lamp failure: A burned-out UV lamp means the scrubber can no longer produce the oxidizers needed to neutralize airborne contaminants
- Ion generator failure: A faulty ion generator stops producing negative ions, significantly reducing the scrubber’s effectiveness
- PCO cell degradation: The photocatalytic cell loses effectiveness over time and needs replacement to maintain performance
- Control board failure: Electrical faults in the control board cause erratic behavior, error codes, or complete system failure
- Fan or motor failure: A failing motor means the scrubber can’t circulate air through the treatment system properly
- Ozone output issues: Some scrubbers produce ozone as a byproduct. Too much ozone is an irritant and a sign the system needs attention.
- Power supply problems: Electrical connection issues preventing the unit from receiving consistent power
- Sensor malfunction: Faulty air quality sensors cause the unit to run incorrectly or fail to respond to changes in air quality

If you’re like me, you’re probably looking at these reviews seeing all five stars thinking they can’t be real, they’re all five stars… No, three stars no two stars almost all five stars! .. Well, they are and for a reason, because you could not get a better conpany to work on your air-conditioning or heating than Pyramid . Garen was amazing! . Here’s the quick story… I’ve had a leak in my condensate pan since last summer… Ibused to be part of AHS. I called them they sent over a terrible terrible company that looked at it tried to unclog the pipes, couldn’t do it…. Told me they couldn’t do it, told me to get a plumber so I spent $150 Service fee to get a plumber.. Still leaked I told them all I wanted was to replace the condensate pan…they said it wasn’t possible cuz it was old style … They submitted to AHS and it was gonna cost me $3000! .. to fix a whole bunch of stuff I didn’t need fixed…. I said no got a second opinion… second company came told me the same thing they couldn’t do it when they submitted to AHS , somehow none of it was covered… Needless to say I left AHS (which you should do if you’re with them it’s a terrible company) …. All I wanted was a condensate pan replaced and the pipes unclogged… So then I went onto Angie’s list got a couple to come. They also said they couldn’t do it… Told me I had to replace it so they could do thousands of dollars of work and my pan was still leaking! . It was winter so I didn’t need my air-conditioning much but a couple of weeks ago when it was hot, I did it ..was it still leaking… badly… I got recommendations from the community on Ring and saw Pyramid recommended... Saw the reviews... Thought I’d take a chance and couldn’t be happier.! Garry came by and did exactly what was needed to be done… Told me he could get a new condensate pan MADE! And replaced pipes so drained better .. which is exactly what he did three days after the initial consultation… He could do what nobody else could or wanted to do! For a a great and fair price! Didn’t try to sell me and stuff I didn’t need , just fixed my problem, did it quickly was very friendly and respectful of the space.. and he’s a friendly guy really great to talk to… And funny ..I honestly wish I could give 10 stars! I cannot say enough good things about Gary amd this company… I’m telling you, if you need HVAC work done in LA, Pyramid is the only place you should call!Posted on Google Dennis H. We were having an issue with our AC connecting to our Google Nest thermostat, and what initially seemed like a complicated problem turned out to be a wiring shortage. Frequently Asked Questions
How much does air scrubber repair cost in Los Angeles?
Air scrubber repair in Los Angeles typically costs between $175 and $900 depending on the type of system and the repair needed. Smaller issues like bulb or power supply replacements cost less, while more involved repairs like control board or ion generator replacement can cost significantly more.
What’s the difference between an air scrubber and an air purifier?
An air purifier is a standalone unit that filters air in a specific room. An air scrubber is built into the HVAC system to help neutralize contaminants throughout your entire home, including on surfaces. Air scrubbers are generally more powerful and cover a larger area than standalone purifiers.
How often should I service my air scrubber in Los Angeles?
Most air scrubbers benefit from an annual inspection and UV lamp or PCO cell replacement. Wildfire smoke, smog, and dust are common in Los Angeles and can put extra strain on these systems, so keeping up with maintenance really does make a difference.
Is it safe to run my air scrubber if it’s not working properly?
It depends on the issue. A scrubber with a failed UV lamp or ion generator is simply less effective. It’s safe to run but not doing its job. While a scrubber producing excessive ozone can become an irritant. If you’re unsure, turn the system off and schedule a diagnostic.
Do you repair all air scrubber brands?
Yes, we service all major air scrubber brands and systems including ActivePure, RGF REME HALO, and other HVAC-integrated and standalone units. If you’re unsure whether we service your specific system, give us a call and we’ll confirm.
